Surah At-Tawba
And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.﴿114﴾
Translation

Simplified Tafsir
وما كان استغفار إبراهيم عليه السلام لأبيه المشرك، إلا عن موعدة وعدها إياه، وهي قوله: {سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا (19:47)}. فلما تبيَّن لإبراهيم أن أباه عدو لله ولم ينفع فيه الوعظ والتذكير، وأنه سيموت كافرًا، تركه وترك الاستغفار له، وتبرأ منه. إن إبراهيم عليه السلام عظيم التضرع لله، كثير الصفح عما يصدر مِن قومه من الزلات.
