Surah At-Tawba
Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.﴿42﴾
Translation
Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
Simplified Tafsir
وبَّخ الله جلَّ جلاله جماعة من المنافقين استأذنوا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في التخلف عن غزوة (تبوك) مبينًا أنه لو كان خروجهم إلى غنيمة قريبة سهلة المنال لاتبعوك، ولكن لما دعوا إلى قتال الروم في أطراف بلاد (الشام) في وقت الحر تخاذلوا، وتخلفوا، وسيعتذرون لتخلفهم عن الخروج حالفين بأنهم لا يستطيعون ذلك، يهلكون أنفسهم بالكذب والنفاق، والله يعلم إنهم لكاذبون فيما يبدون لك من الأعذار.
